Miracles

Life is made up of small miracles. Sometimes I just wonder how God works that things somehow always fall into place in the most unexpected ways that we humans could never imagine. And I guess it’s the wonders in this world that makes it worth living.

Two miracles I witnessed these past few days have made me believe even more that God is watching us. One is a story of my friend. He was fasting during the day for the whole 40 days of Lent. Then on Saturday we fasted for a whole day. We were doing our volunteer trip overnight with autistic children. We took turns doing a night watch to take care of the kids. He was not supposed to be on the night watch, but volunteered to take over for a friend. It was almost midnight and the end of his fast. He would not have gotten any food until the next morning. Just as he went outside, groups of other people were having pizza. And they offered him some pizza to it. It was really amazing! He told me that “I gave up food for God, and he gave it back to me.” Had he not by accident been on that night watch, he wouldn’t have ran into the pizza party and be offered pizza at midnight, a wonderful reward for this 40 days of fasting!

I also gave up coffee for 40 days. Being someone who used to drink at least 1 coffee every morning, it was one of the hardest thing I have ever done. It was over on Easter Sunday, and I thought “Maybe I can give up coffee from now on forever”. But surprisingly, on Monday, in class we studied a case about Starbucks, and our professor gave all of us students free coffee in class. This was an unlikely coincidence, and could only be because God wanted to reward me, and I was really grateful, sipping my first cup of well-deserved coffee after 6 weeks.

I used to be this super ambitious and well-organized girl. I would make plans and goals and wanted everything to be perfect. But throughout the years, I learnt that you never can plan the future. You cannot even plan the next day, because you simply do not know what will turn up each day. God has plans for us, it’s just that we can’t see the big picture yet. We just have to have faith that things will turn out to be the best. And it is true. Each time I faced some disappointment because things didn’t turn out the way I wanted them to be, looking back, I always realize that it was the best thing that ever happened to me. God did not give me what I want, but he gave me something better.

So nowadays, each day I wake up thinking “I wonder what today will hold? I am prepared for all the joys that will happen today”. And everyday turned out to be different, with small little surprises. A phone call to a friend turned out to be a nice cooking session with the girls. A coffee date turned out to be a nice walk long the lake. A lunch break turned out to be a beautiful picnic on a sunny day in the Imperial palace. A birthday dinner turned out to be an encounter with a long lost childhood friend. A visit to the flea market turned out to be a wonderful bargain shopping trip.

I don’t go to bed praying for God to give me what I want anymore. I thank God for everything that happened to me during the day, all the joy I received. And I asked God to give me the strength, patience and faith to wait for what life has to offer to me and to be able to see the path that lies ahead.

Life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you're gonna get.

Smile

You will laugh again

- “I don’t think I can ever laugh again”

- “Trust me. You will laugh again!”

- “When?”

- “When something is really funny!”

I finished reading 2 books in 4 days. One book made me really sad and angry about guys. But it was realistic. The second book was hilarious. It made me laugh. And once you start laughing, you couldn’t stop.

And it kind of hit close to home: this highflying lawyer who decided to give up everything and started a job as a housekeeper despite not knowing a single thing about cooking or cleaning. Well, I have always secretly wanted to be a housewife (except that I don’t have a husband, yet) so I could stay at home and look after my kids and pets. I also want to be able to bake beautiful cakes and pastries and write a novel. Oh well!

No coffee

Tonight I’ll go to church (but a Japanese mass) with a friend for Ash Wednesday. To tell the truth, I haven’t been to a church service in 2 years. I have been thinking what I would give up for 40 days during Lent. It has to be something I really like. But there’s nothing that I like so much that would be difficult to give up.

And this morning I suddenly realized: it’s coffee! I’m a coffee addict. Each morning if I don’t have a cup of coffee, I walk around like a zombie no matter how much sleep I had the night before.

So I am going to pray every day and give up coffee for 40 days. I want to be fully awake and live my life the fullest from now on.

When I grow up

Look what I found today while going through boxes in the storage!

When I grow up

By Le Suong Mai - 4 September 1994
When I grow up, I want to be
A normal grown-up with a job to be
To have a happy peaceful life
And bring memories of my childhood life

When I grow up I want to be
A grown-up who can dress successfully
A human being who has manners
A grown-up who could find herself happiness

When I grow up I want to be
A gown up who could care for people
And make them happy and be happy
I want to be a person with courage

When I grow up, all I want to be is myself again.

---------

Somehow 15 years later, I am still working on these simple goals.
