Lessons on love

This is a story about love. Not a love story.

I stumbled upon a series of short stories about modern love on the New York Times and couldn’t stop reading. They really hit close to home. They are not novels of beautiful love stories or tragedies. They are stories written by real people of our times and the relationships they have gone through. Stories recalling the real experiences most of us have had in our lives: falling in love, hopeless love, heartbreak, betrayal, disappointment, regrets etc. Some stories gave you hope, some made you smile, some brought tears to your eyes.

Anyways, the other day suddenly I thought of my college ex-boyfriend. And ironically the next day he called me online just to catch up. I said sorry to him again, one of the many times I have apologized to him since we broke up. Our relationship was a rocky one, full of criticism, tears, fights, anger and breakups. But that’s not to say that we didn’t have good times together. Now only by looking back can I realize the things I took for granted: the IKEA furniture he lovingly assembled for me in my new apartment, the meals we had at our favorite Belgian restaurant, the times when he helped me with Physics homework while it wasn’t even his major, the many flights he took just to see me for a few days. As time goes by, recollections of a relationship fades, what is left is just one or two memories that make it all worthwhile. I was young, stupid and ambitious. He was young, naïve and hot tempered. Sometimes relationships need a combination of the right person and right timing. If we had met each other at a later stage of life, when we have grown up and knew how to behave, to value what we have, maybe things wouldn’t have turned out that way. I left him and the city we both loved. I broke his heart. In between the begging and pleading that came afterwards, he also called me a selfish bitch and said, “I’m the best shot you ever had at happiness. But you ruined it.”

It took years and many disappointments later for me to realize I was really a selfish bitch and that he had to really truly love me to be able to put up with me. However, he wanted me to be the person he hoped for not for who I am. Only by being so cruel to him could I later learn my lesson that to have a real relationship, you need to learn to love another person wholeheartedly more than yourself. From then on, I vowed to never make the same mistake and to become the best girlfriend I could be in any relationship I would commit to. I learned to make sacrifices, to compromise, to be dedicated, caring and loving. I would never cheat or lie or take someone for granted.

But maybe that was not enough. Fast forward to the future. I met a guy who was the complete opposite of my college boyfriend. He was smart, successful, and wise enough for me to look up to. He loved me for who I am and accepted my childish pursuits (or appreciate the red nail polish). He was old and mature enough for us to avoid all the silly fights. But being older means he has had a few years of experience more than me. And I was too young and unprepared for how complicated life or someone’s past could be. This time he broke my heart and left me shocked and devastated. I desperately wanted him back. He did come back, but each time I pushed him further away because I could not get over the pain and hurtful feelings he left me with. In the end, we have come to an irreconcilable place full of regrets of what could have been.

I have had a lot of time to think since then. I have come to understand that, loving someone is not enough. You have to learn to forgive that person and forgive yourself. Or else you will never move past the point of hurting one another for past mistakes. Life is complicated and unpredictable. A relationship is a rocky journey. People make mistakes. Things happen. In order to survive the many tests and make it through together, we need tolerance, trust and forgiveness. It is because we love someone that we have faith in that person. Not because we have faith that we love them. If only I have learnt to forgive and forget, I could have saved myself and the person I loved from our self-inflicted pain.

When looking back at our past relationships, there are so many “should’ve”, “would’ve”, “could’ve” but it is impossible to turn back time. And given a second chance, would we have acted differently or would we make the same mistakes all over again, just because we are human, I wonder?

2. Học tập tốt, lao động tốt: Không lười học nữa, học bài và làm bài đầy đủ. Làm việc tốt, trả lời khách hàng, giúp đỡ đồng nghiệp, hỗ trợ và chỉ dẫn cho nhân viên. Xây dựng WedinStyle thành 1 thương hiệu nổi tiếng và một nơi làm việc lý tưởng.

3. Đoàn kết tốt, kỷ luật tốt: Không nói xấu, ghen tị với người khác. Giúp đỡ mọi người xung quanh. Ăn ngủ, thể dục đầy đủ. Không thức khuya dậy muộn bỏ bữa, trễ hẹn, lười biếng, ham chơi!

4. Giữ gìn vệ sinh thật tốt: dọn dẹp nhà cửa đều đặn, tưới cây, đổ rác, là quần áo.

5. Khiêm tốn, thật thà, dũng cảm: không hiếu thắng, nhanh ẩu đoảng. Thật thà ngu ngơ khi cần thiết. Dũng cảm đối mặt với sự thật, mạnh mẽ, tự tin, không lo sợ linh tinh.

Hi hi hi...

The alchemist

All these years, I always thought that to be happy and successful, you have to try to perfect yourself – study hard, obtain more degrees, learn new skills, travel, read, meet a lot of people. I tried and tried so hard to do so much and to please others but in the end, I always failed and was never truly happy or satisfied.

However, lately, I have come to learn the secret to true happiness – perfecting oneself from within. And I also learnt the 4 most important factors in life that are also exactly what I need to work on. For my 19th birthday many years ago, a friend gave me the book “The Alchemist”. I read it not knowing the many wonderful lessons it contained. If only I have realized this many years earlier!

But I guess it’s never too late to learn. There is still so much more I need to do to become a better and happier person.

Patience and persistency: the best things in life are worth the wait. I was always too anxious and impatient; I wanted to get results right away. Now I learnt to be calm and patient and to have faith.

“When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream.”

Self-control: to control one’s temper and emotions. I guess this can only be achieved with maturity and complete fulfillment with oneself.

Live the moment: I have always been so tense; worrying about everything I could think of. I was always making plans for the future and never able to concentrate on enjoying the present. So these days, I am practicing living a slow and relaxed life. I keep reminding myself “Everything will be fine”. And surprisingly, as I make less plans, slowed down and just take it easy, fully concentrating on enjoying the present moment, everyday presents itself with new events, new friends and new possibilities. I am never bored or sad or anxious anymore!

“The secret is here in the present. If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And, if you improve on the present, what comes later will also be better.

Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we're living right now.”

Positive thinking: It is true, we are what we believe! If we believe in positive things, we attract positive outcomes. If we think we’re unlucky, we’ll end up with bad lucks. Only recently did I discover “The secret” (The Power Law of Attraction). In the past, although I was always busy, seemingly successful and always smiling and laughing, deep inside I was insecure and full of negative thoughts. I was always scared and imagining the worst that could happen. I imagined an ending before things could even begin. And somehow, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Serves me right!

“Life attracts life.”

Miracles

Life is made up of small miracles. Sometimes I just wonder how God works that things somehow always fall into place in the most unexpected ways that we humans could never imagine. And I guess it’s the wonders in this world that makes it worth living.

Two miracles I witnessed these past few days have made me believe even more that God is watching us. One is a story of my friend. He was fasting during the day for the whole 40 days of Lent. Then on Saturday we fasted for a whole day. We were doing our volunteer trip overnight with autistic children. We took turns doing a night watch to take care of the kids. He was not supposed to be on the night watch, but volunteered to take over for a friend. It was almost midnight and the end of his fast. He would not have gotten any food until the next morning. Just as he went outside, groups of other people were having pizza. And they offered him some pizza to it. It was really amazing! He told me that “I gave up food for God, and he gave it back to me.” Had he not by accident been on that night watch, he wouldn’t have ran into the pizza party and be offered pizza at midnight, a wonderful reward for this 40 days of fasting!

I also gave up coffee for 40 days. Being someone who used to drink at least 1 coffee every morning, it was one of the hardest thing I have ever done. It was over on Easter Sunday, and I thought “Maybe I can give up coffee from now on forever”. But surprisingly, on Monday, in class we studied a case about Starbucks, and our professor gave all of us students free coffee in class. This was an unlikely coincidence, and could only be because God wanted to reward me, and I was really grateful, sipping my first cup of well-deserved coffee after 6 weeks.

I used to be this super ambitious and well-organized girl. I would make plans and goals and wanted everything to be perfect. But throughout the years, I learnt that you never can plan the future. You cannot even plan the next day, because you simply do not know what will turn up each day. God has plans for us, it’s just that we can’t see the big picture yet. We just have to have faith that things will turn out to be the best. And it is true. Each time I faced some disappointment because things didn’t turn out the way I wanted them to be, looking back, I always realize that it was the best thing that ever happened to me. God did not give me what I want, but he gave me something better.

So nowadays, each day I wake up thinking “I wonder what today will hold? I am prepared for all the joys that will happen today”. And everyday turned out to be different, with small little surprises. A phone call to a friend turned out to be a nice cooking session with the girls. A coffee date turned out to be a nice walk long the lake. A lunch break turned out to be a beautiful picnic on a sunny day in the Imperial palace. A birthday dinner turned out to be an encounter with a long lost childhood friend. A visit to the flea market turned out to be a wonderful bargain shopping trip.

I don’t go to bed praying for God to give me what I want anymore. I thank God for everything that happened to me during the day, all the joy I received. And I asked God to give me the strength, patience and faith to wait for what life has to offer to me and to be able to see the path that lies ahead.

Life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you're gonna get.
