All these years, I always thought that to be happy and successful, you have to try to perfect yourself – study hard, obtain more degrees, learn new skills, travel, read, meet a lot of people. I tried and tried so hard to do so much and to please others but in the end, I always failed and was never truly happy or satisfied.
However, lately, I have come to learn the secret to true happiness – perfecting oneself from within. And I also learnt the 4 most important factors in life that are also exactly what I need to work on. For my 19th birthday many years ago, a friend gave me the book “The Alchemist”. I read it not knowing the many wonderful lessons it contained. If only I have realized this many years earlier!
But I guess it’s never too late to learn. There is still so much more I need to do to become a better and happier person.
Patience and persistency: the best things in life are worth the wait. I was always too anxious and impatient; I wanted to get results right away. Now I learnt to be calm and patient and to have faith.
“When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream.”
Self-control: to control one’s temper and emotions. I guess this can only be achieved with maturity and complete fulfillment with oneself.
Live the moment: I have always been so tense; worrying about everything I could think of. I was always making plans for the future and never able to concentrate on enjoying the present. So these days, I am practicing living a slow and relaxed life. I keep reminding myself “Everything will be fine”. And surprisingly, as I make less plans, slowed down and just take it easy, fully concentrating on enjoying the present moment, everyday presents itself with new events, new friends and new possibilities. I am never bored or sad or anxious anymore!
“The secret is here in the present. If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And, if you improve on the present, what comes later will also be better.
Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we're living right now.”
Positive thinking: It is true, we are what we believe! If we believe in positive things, we attract positive outcomes. If we think we’re unlucky, we’ll end up with bad lucks. Only recently did I discover “The secret” (The Power Law of Attraction). In the past, although I was always busy, seemingly successful and always smiling and laughing, deep inside I was insecure and full of negative thoughts. I was always scared and imagining the worst that could happen. I imagined an ending before things could even begin. And somehow, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Serves me right!
“Life attracts life.”
